Sustainability & Certifications

An overview of the third-party sustainability, indoor-air-quality, and material-safety certification programs represented across our current supplier network, organized by material category.

Charles Alan Furniture sources wood, textile, surface, and finish materials from an established network of North American manufacturers and distributors. As part of our ongoing sustainability review, we evaluated the certifications maintained by suppliers across each of our core material categories. The programs referenced below are held by the majority of our active suppliers in a given category today. Certification is always specific to a material, product line, or finish — availability depends on the exact selection made for a project, and our team can confirm current documentation on request.

Certification Programs Represented In Our Supply Chain

These third-party program marks appear on qualifying products across our current material and finish suppliers. Each mark represents an independently audited standard; certification always applies to a specific product, not to Charles Alan Furniture as a whole.

Sustainability Practices By Material Category

Wood, Panels & Engineered Lumber

Chain-of-custody forest certification is the most common form of documentation across our wood, plywood, and engineered-panel suppliers. The large majority of our panel and lumber sources maintain active FSC Chain of Custody certification, which verifies an unbroken, independently audited trail from a certified forest, controlled source, or reclaimed material to the finished product. Several suppliers, or their parent manufacturing groups, are additionally certified to the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Fiber Sourcing Standard, which requires third-party field verification of responsible harvesting practices, and to PEFC Chain of Custody, an internationally recognized forest-certification framework used alongside FSC.

Foam & Cushioning

Most seating and cushioning foam grades in our supply chain are independently tested to California Technical Bulletin (Cal TB) 117-2013, the smolder-resistance standard required for upholstered furniture sold in California and adopted as the baseline flammability benchmark nationwide. This coverage spans our full range of foam densities and firmness levels, from soft topper-grade cushioning to high-resiliency seating cores. Select high-resiliency, high-support seating grades are additionally verified to the Upholstered Furniture Action Council (UFAC) voluntary industry classification, a longstanding construction standard focused on smolder-ignition resistance.

Textiles, Fabrics & Leather

Most of our upholstery textile and leather suppliers certify select collections to UL GREENGUARD Gold, verifying that a product meets strict chemical-emission limits suitable for schools, healthcare, and other sensitive indoor environments. Many of the same suppliers publish Health Product Declarations (HPDs), disclosing material ingredients and associated health information in a standardized format, and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), which report a product's full life-cycle environmental impact under an independently verified, ISO-aligned methodology.

Decorative Surfaces, Laminates & Quartz

Our laminate, solid-surface, and quartz suppliers carry the broadest certification coverage in our network. Common programs include FSC Chain of Custody for wood-fiber content, GREENGUARD Gold and SCS Indoor Advantage Gold for low chemical emissions, and NSF/ANSI 51 certification confirming select surfaces are safe for direct food contact. HPD and EPD documentation is also commonly available for these product lines, supporting project-level material transparency requirements.

Coatings & Finishes

Several of our wood coating and finish suppliers offer GREENGUARD Gold certified, formaldehyde-free formulations designed for commercial interiors, supporting low-emitting-material requirements on architectural and hospitality projects.

Manufacturing Quality & Compliance

Beyond environmental certification, many of our hardware, metal-fabrication, and industrial-supply partners maintain ISO 9001 quality management system certification, an internationally recognized standard confirming consistent process control and product quality. Our supplier network also maintains compliance with California Proposition 65 labeling requirements for consumer products sold in California.
